Climate analysis and adaptation study for Arnhem

Climate analysis and adaptation study for Arnhem

2008 – 2009, funded by EU North West Europe Interreg ‘Future cities’, project leaders: Hans van Ammers, Sanda Lenzholzer

Arnhem municipality was one of the first municipalities in the Netherlands that actively took urban climate as a challenge into account in the shaping of the city’s future. As a first step the municipality asked Sanda Lenzholzer to conduct a first study into the urban climate challenges of the city. Sanda involved a group of 10 MSc students to make urban climatope maps and identify problem and potentials areas. For these areas students made 10 individual plans that showed how different the environment would look when urban climate is taken into account. The results were highly inspiring for the commissioners from the municipality. They were a true eye-opener and incited more actions on urban climate research and adaptation in Arnhem.
